Jonathan Chappell is primarily an orchestral percussionist and timpanist of professional standard. He is at home with the entire range of percussion instruments, most of which he is able to supply. In addition he plays the drum-kit in all styles. He is an able sight reader, and is comfortable in theatre, concert hall or studio.
He has a busy freelance career, playing for musical theatre and orchestral and band concerts throughout Sussex. Previously he played for the BBC, Bristol Sinfonia and other West Country Orchestras, as well as The Chelsea Opera Group and the Ernest Read Music Association at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
An important part of his life is education, and as well as teaching percussion at Moira House Girls School, Eastbourne, East Sussex, he gives drum lessons at Newlands School Seaford and St Aubyn's School Rottingdean. He has a substantial number of private pupils, and has presented percussion and African drumming workshops to schools and corporate events throughout Sussex and beyond.
